REVIEW: SIGUR ROS @ MoMa PopRally series
By the nature of Sigur Ros’ known transcendental sounds of post-rock and because it evokes an imaginary mythology of a beautiful and nonsensical language; i knew, when i heard of the concert at MoMa, that it would not be an ordinary musical concert, but an extraordinary cultural event.
Last Tuesday a lucky few hundred gathered in the main hall of the MoMa – as a part of its PopRally series in conjunction with Olafur Eliasson’s exhibit “Take Your Time” – and witnessed an incredible juxtaposition of visual and audio stimulations as well as the sensation of being at the right place at the right time.
Although the acoustics weren’t great and the open bar caused people to walk and talk during the performance, the ethereal ambience remained intact by the incredible lighting; the undeniable bucolic beauty of the band playing in front of the museum’s garden and the knowledge that the whole lysergic soiree was taking place in one of the most influential art spaces for the past decades. The melancholic yet joyful songs set the tone for contradictory feelings throughout the full 2 hours the band was on stage; at the same time ephemeral and eternal, as if in an photograph, filled with a nostalgia for an elf-like fantasy of bliss. Every new song felt like a step closer to aufklärung.
The last song (Gobbledigook) before the encore was from their new album (með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust) to be released on the 23rd of June. And from what I heard, you’ll probably find me in line at the nearest record store on Monday morning.
If you can’t wait, the whole album is available via streaming audio here (http://www.sigur-ros.co.uk)
